Data party
Community event for curating and sharing geospatial datasets
Data party is a collaborative and often informal event where participants come together to curate, manage, visualise and share geospatial datasets openly available. Data parties can gather a diverse community from higher-education students, staff, industrial actors and citizens to work together toward transparent, accessible and sustainable (research) data management. This inclusive approach builds awareness on research data resources, encouraging dialogue across perspectives and building trust and ownership on the results. Data parties are also an efficient way to manage research data - multiple people working together with snacks and refreshments achieve the goals in a couple of hours, when an individual would spend several workdays for the task.

We at the University of Turku organise data parties once or twice a year. We collaborate with our industrial partners and networks like the Location Innovation Hub, Gispo and Lounaistieto to broaden the scope of the events. Usually, the data parties are tied to our curricula - Geography students attend the events as part of their course activities. We use open-source tools and open platforms, such as the Geonode-based Climate Risk Database and UTU Geospatial data service to manage and share the curated geospatial datasets.
The data party events are designed as an innovative data management and learning solution which are interactive, engaging and fun. Ultimately, they promote a culture of participation and shared learning. We announce registration to the events here in DIDAIhub and our LinkedIn - stay tuned for next event and join us!
